Tuesday Rally Protesting Nuclear War
August 15 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Email received from CALC states:
Tell Congress: Stop Trump from launching an unprovoked nuclear attack
The threat posed by Donald Trump’s presidency just got much, much scarier.
Donald Trump’s reckless, ad-libbed threat to a nuclear-armed North Korea has put the entire world on edge. North Korea has responded by threatening to fire missiles towards Guam, and escalating tensions are making the idea of the unthinkable happening suddenly more real than it has been in decades.
Congress has a duty not just to our country but also to the world to rein in this reckless, erratic president.
Seasoned observers of global politics say they haven’t seen anything quite like this before. Two unpredictable, erratic, and inexperienced world leaders are playing nuclear chicken with literally millions of lives at stake.
When Donald Trump casually threatens destruction on a scale “the world has never seen,” everyone knows what that means. There are still people alive in Japan who survived the only nuclear attacks on human beings in history.
As president, Trump currently has unilateral and unchecked authority to order an unprovoked use of nuclear weapons. No cabinet member, no advisor, and no military official can stop him from doing so.
The “Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act of 2017” would prohibit the president from initiating a nuclear first strike without a declaration of war by Congress.
Add your name: I call on Congress to pass emergency legislation to prohibit the president from using nuclear weapons in a first strike without congressional approval.
Action # 2
At the United Nations on July 7th, representatives of 122 member nations adopted a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This treaty would ban the production, testing, stockpiling, use or threat to use nuclear weapons.
Our own nation, regrettably, boycotted the drafting process and publicly condemned the treaty upon its completion, despite our repeated declarations over the years that we seek a world free of these most powerful of all weapons of mass destruction.
The Non-Proliferation Treaty has limited the spread of nuclear weapons. It is time for us to live up to the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament.
Contact Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and ask them to strongly advocate for U.S. endorsement of the treaty when it opens for other nations’ signatures on September 20.
