Tuesday Rally: What are they hiding?!
June 5, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Adding to last week’s rally:
BREAKING: A U.S. Senator (Merkley) has not only just been denied entry into a detention center (on Sunday 6/3) for immigrant children but the police were called to stop him. The windows are blacked out. What is going on inside? What are they hiding?!
Please call your reps and Senators and make some noise. This is not acceptable. Call: 202-224-3121.
Last week’s statement:
Three stories have come to light recently regarding vulnerable refugee children exposed to separation from their parents, unaccompanied minors processed through the myriad of government agencies to be effectively unaccounted for in the system, and abuses including exploitation of immigrants in the custody of our government.
We can’t imagine any person with a heart reading about the treatment of these vulnerable children and not wanting to do something about it.
Details include customs and immigration officials kicking and punching children, using stun guns on children, verbally abusing children, denying children medical attention, denying children permission to stand or move freely for days, threatening children with torture or sexual abuse, and actually sexually abusing children.
For perspective, an ACLU immigration rights lawyer called it “unprecedented…the worst thing I’ve seen in 25+ years of doing this civil rights work.”
It’s not just abuse, by the way. There’s also evidence that hundreds have been turned over to sex traffickers. By our own government.
We should all be calling our Members of Congress (MoC’s) until their lines are full, as well as Homeland Security & Jeff Sessions lines.
Lastly, we should call outside our borders to get some help for these children:
International Human Rights Watch 212-290-4700
United Nations Human Rights
We will meet with the representatives for Senators Merkley and Wyden and Rep DeFazio to ask that they do everything in their power to bring an end to this inhumane practice and to hold those responsible accountable. We will also have resources to help folks act locally by asking the city of Springfield to end their contract with ICE to use the city jail to house ICE detainees. A policy which clearly violates the council’s stated goal of fostering an environment which values diversity and inclusion and may even violate state law.
The DOJ separation of children policy is immoral, inhumane, unconstitutional, and very possibly a Human Rights Violation. MoC’s can change DOJ policy-they have the power. Senator Wyden leads the minority in the judiciary committee whose role it is to oversee the DOJ.
Calls, letters, texts, faxes, rallies, need to be made to put pressure on MoC’s to act on the heinous DOJ policy and to hold accountable those enacting this policy at Customs and ICE to help protect these kids!
